Welcome to 2016 // Willkommen 2016

Dear DKG members and Canada friends,

We are well under way into the year and with this newsletter we would like to inform you of our mixture of social, cultural and business oriented events for 2016 with the team DKG Oberbayern. From more regular events to incorporating newer ideas we hope to see you out as well as hear from you throughout the year.

To give you a feel for things, as has been the custom, we are continuing our more known programming, which this year ranges from a hiking tour in the mountains, a biergarden-outing, an Oktoberfest visit (a new „tradition“) to our well-known Thanksgiving potluck dinner and Christmas party. Following the lead of the DKG at large we are also pursuing the theme of exploring our diverse membership itself. For instance, in a new format of an after work get-together we will hear brief presententations from select DKG members about their unique German-Canadian connection (see below for details). On seperate occasions we are hosting a Canadian wine tasting with plenty of opportunity to meet new people and for business events, we are strengthening our ties with the German Canadian Business Club of the Canadian Consulate in Munich.

Below you can find the event descriptions and as you will see, some events are still a work in progress and thus subject to change. Nonetheless we wanted to give you at least an idea of what is in the “pipeline”. At the same time we are also working on a few more “event goodies”, which are still too early to talk about, so stay tuned.

Last but not least, do you have comments, suggestions or ideas for us? We would love to hear from you and what is more don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to lend us a hand. As you know our (fantastic!) team consists entirely of volunteers, which range from young to still young at heart, German to Canadian natives (or even elsewhere), and for that matter we look forward to expanding our cultural mosaic.

Wishing you „sunny ways“

Sincerely,

Georg Schmitz

on behalf of the DKG Oberbayern Organizing Team

Events Calendar 2016

-[New!] After-work „Meet the Member“

We’re introducing a new bi-monthly (i.e. every two months) event for professionals and networkers alike who’ll meet for a casual gettogether in a local Munich venue.

We’re using a simple equation: Grab an after-work drink, meet Canada enthusiasts and enjoy listening to a 15 minute ‚pitch‘ by selected individuals on what makes their Canadian-connection unique. We encourage light and even humerous presentations, fitting for an ‚after work‘ drink. E-Mail us if you’re interested in pitching you’re unique story @ team@dkg-oberbayern.de.

Event Details: Details coming – we will be in a smaller local Munich venue

Event lead: Hannes Weiland

-[New!] Wine & Dine – Canadian Wine Tasting with Florian Berger

Date: April – Date to be confirmed

Following popular request, we are putting together a special evening with Florian Berger (operator of WineDelight), pairing Canadian wines with local food.

Event Details: This event is by advance reservation only. Details will be coming soon.

-Vortrag / Presentation by Peter Patrick Baumgartner, ILF Consulting Engineers

Date: May – date to be confirmed

Austro-Canadian Patrick Baumgartner (President & CEO) will give us an insight into the activities of ILF Consulting Engineers, the economic environment in Alberta after the oil price crash and the cultual differences of doing engineering work in Canada and Germany.

Event Details: Time and date to be confirmed. Meeting point will be: ILF Beratende Ingenieure GmbH, Werner-Eckert-Straße 7, 81829 München

Event Lead: Dr. Georg Schmitz

-Hike in the Bavarian Alps

Date: June – date to be confirmed (Alternate date September)

After last year’s well attended trip to the Slyrs whisky distillery in Schliersee, we’re bringing back the event to another special location in the Alps. Like last year, this will be a family friendly days outing, with an easy hike and stopover at a venue.

Event Details: Please stay tuned.

Event Lead: Jutta Vielmetter

-Bavarian Biergarden Meet & Greet in Hirschgarten

Date: July – date to be confirmed (with the right weather!)

Come and enjoy a beer, Obatzda and sun @ Hirschgarten ! This is a casual after-work beergarden social open to anyone from families to friends alike. Of course we’re ‚planning‘ for good weather to enjoy the outdoors, however we may reserve a last minute rescheduling pending the weather. We’ll have our DKG table sign and a Canadian flag up – we’ll be easy to spot.

Event Details: Hirschgarten 1, 80639 München

-DKG Annual Meeting in Potsdam

Date: July 15th – 17th

We are cordially inviting you to our annual DKG-celebration, which this year is taking place under the theme: Brandenburg meets Canada, Feiern auf den „Great Lakes“ von Potsdam.

As is custom, we are starting on Friday at around 7 p.m. in the restaurant „Seerose“ at the Neustädter Havelbucht. Those interested have the opportunity to get a tour of the historic town of Potsdam. Saturday will start with a tour of a castle and a joint lunch at the Mercure Hotel, followed by the general meeting and board of directors elections. The evening highlight will be the „Grande Island Tour“ on the MS Belvedere, including a reception with sparkling wine, music and a buffet. In addition on Sunday morning castle „Neues Palais“ as well as Park Sanssouci can be visited.

Event Details: For full event details visit the DKG website or find attached the event program. Please register using the event registration form.

We’re taking a little summer break, eh !

-[New ‚tradition‘] DKG meets Oktoberfest

Date: September – please stay stuned

If the Waterloo Oktoberfest is any indiciation, Canadians have an affinity for Oktoberfest. It is therefore only logical to host a DKG get-together at the Munich Oktoberfest, which we anticipate will quickly become a new tradition in our annual calendar.

Event Details: Please stay tuned.

-Annual Thanksgiving Dinner

Date: October 10th

As has been our tradition, we’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving with a large turkey feast. Invited are family, friends, as well as anyone who is curious to learn more about what Canadian Thanksgiving is all about. Like in 2015, we’ll be at our well received new location, the Pelkovenschlössl. A specific event invite will follow closer to the date.

-Annual X-mas Party

Date: 1st or 2nd week in December

Our prized annual Christmas event will again be taking place this year at the Canadian Consulate (to be confirmed). From tombola prizes, Christmas cookies, Canadian wines and sweets, this rsvp-event has something for everyone. Specifics will be sent as we get close to the season.
