transmediale Marshall McLuhan Lecture is a collaboration between transmediale and the Embassy of Canada in Berlin.

DE Den diesjährigen Marshall McLuhan Vortrag hält Megan Boler vom Department of Social Justice Education an der University of Toronto. Bolers Fachbereich umfasst die Auswirkungen von Technologie auf die Gesellschaft, so auch die Beziehungen zwischen Medien, Demokratie und Bildung. In ihrem Vortrag fragt sie, wie wir in das sogenannte Zeitalter der “Post-Truth” gelangt sind, in dem oft Emotionen über Fakten gestellt werden. Sie untersucht, welchen Einfluss das Zuschauen und die Medien – insbesondere die sozialen Medien – auf Emotionen haben, und wie diese wiederum heutzutage das Verständnis von Wahrheit definieren.

EN This year’s Marshall McLuhan lecture will be delivered by Megan Boler of the Department of Social Justice Education at the University of Toronto. Boler’s field of study is in the social implications of technology, including the interrelations between media, democracy, and education. In her lecture, she questions how we arrived in the so-called “post-truth” era, with its preference for emotions over facts. She explores how spectatorship and media—particularly social media—influence the emotions that underlie belief and, in turn, constitute today’s version of the truth.

FR Cette année, la Conférence Marshall McLuhan sera tenue par Megan Boler du département de Social Justice Education de l’Université de Toronto. Les recherches de Mme Boler sont axées sur les répercussions sociales de la technologie, y compris les interrelations entre les médias, la démocratie et l’éducation. Dans sa conférence, elle s’interroge sur notre arrivée dans l’ère dite de « post-vérité », où les émotions tendent à l’emporter sur les faits. Elle explore l’influence des médias, en particulier les médias sociaux, sur les émotions qui sous-tendent les croyances qui, à leur tour, fondent la « vérité » dans sa version actuelle.

DE Als Teil der transmediale 2018 zeigt der Marshall McLuhan Salon eine Videoinstallation, die Kooperationen und Experimente aus McLuhans berühmten Seminaren Culture and Communications vorstellt, die zwischen 1953-1955 an der University of Toronto stattfanden. Das Seminar hatte seinen Höhepunkt in der Veröffentlichung der transdisziplinären Zeitschrift Explorations, welche unter anderem anthropologische Studien über die Wirkung der Medien, experimentelle Poesie, wissenschaftliche Forschungsprojekte und urbane Studien zusammenbrachte. Clarks Installation macht dieses Archivmaterial durch ein interaktives, multimediales System zugänglich.

EN As part of transmediale 2018, the Marshall McLuhan Salon will feature a video installation that excavates the collaborations and experiments from McLuhan’s landmark Culture and Communications seminar, given at the University of Toronto between 1953-1935. The seminar culminated in the journal Explorations, which collected anthropological studies of media effects, experimental poetry, scientific research projects and urban studies. Clark’s installation makes these archival materials accessible through an interactive, multimedia system.

FR Dans le cadre de la transmediale 2018, le Salon Marshall McLuhan présentera une installation vidéo qui explore les collaborations et les expériences issues du séminaire historique Culture and Communications, donné à l’Université de Toronto entre 1953 et 1955. Le projet a débouché sur la création de la revue interdisciplinaire Explorations, qui comprenait des études anthropologiques sur les effets des médias, de la poésie expérimentale, des projets de recherche scientifique et des études urbaines. L’installation de Clark rend ces documents d’archives accessibles grâce à un système multimédia interactif.
