SUMMARY:Peace\, Order and (Good) Translation An Idea and a Commitment that Shaped Canada
DESCRIPTION:Jane Koustas will address in her presentation the shaping of the Canadian nation and Canadian identity through the constitutional commitment to bilingualism. Claiming that the presence and translation of the Other is an idea that shaped Canada\, she will discuss the importance of translation\, particularly that of Quebec literature into English\, in the understanding and conceptualization of nation and nationhood. \nJane Koustas is a Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Brock University\, St. Catherines\, Ontario\, where she directs Canadian Studies. She served as the Craig Dobbin Professor of Canadian Studies at University College Dublin\, Ireland. She holds a PhD from Queen’s University\, Kingston\, Ontario.\nProfessor Koustas’ research interests include English-Canadian literature in translation\, translation theory and practice\, translation history in Canada as well as Quebec and Irish theatre.
