Not only the UK but also Canada and the whole Commonwealth has lost their Queen.
And the whole world has lost a Grande Dame.

The weekend of August 19th to August 21st 2022 united people from all over Germany in Bielefeld.
The reason? They all joined for the music of Canadian musician Morgan Finlay. Morgan is a longtime friend of the Deutsch-Kanadische Gesellschaft and even wrote a song for the DKG – The Long Way – which is played as „intro“ and „outro“ in our podcast.
In 2020, as all other artists, Morgan saw his shows being cancelled and had to find a way to continue playing music. That is when he started streaming live shows(Facebook and YouTube). Many of his fans and also new people gladly followed him online; it was after all, the only way to experience live music for a long time. To be able to interact with everyone, Morgan showed the comments on his screen and read them, greeting all, one by one. A majority of the same people (from around the globe) started to virtually meet at Morgan’s concerts and soon, people interacted with each other using the comments. That’s how a community started to build around Morgans‘ music. One day, Martin Gutsch, our treasurer and big fan of Morgan, came up with the name „International Morgan Finlay Family“. Week after week, the „IMFF“ met for an evening of music and fun to forget about everything else and connect with like-minded people.
And then one day, when life finally came back to „almost“ normal and we could meet in person again, the idea was born for a „live“ meeting with the IMFF. Let me just mention here that most of us had never met in person, this was the first time – with a result of many budding friendships.
And so it is how the weekend in Bielefeld, the city that actually doesn’t exist, came to life. „Our DKG Martin“ and a team of devoted fans organized a wonderful weekend where the IMFF could meet and have their very own Morgan Finlay concert. Friday evening, all (with our star Morgan of course) met in the „Finca-Bar-Celona“ for a chill out. Then we had a wonderful tour of the city on Saturday morning with an enjoyable weather of circa 23 degrees celsius. In the evening, we all gathered at the wonderful Filmhaus Bielefeld, graciously sponsored by the DKG, for an intimate concert with the man of the weekend, Morgan Finlay. Sunday morning, we finished the „party“ with a very nice breakfast, over the roofs of Bielefeld in „The Bernstein“.
It was really a memorable German-Canadian moment in time. Then everyone could not have been more different from one another. But their love for Morgan Finlay’s music and his wonderful, kind and generous personality brought them together. It goes to show how crucial, relevant and meaningful culture and music are for our lives. Thank you again to the organizers, and the DKG for making this possible. And for Morgan of course, for not giving up on music when it got rough; instead using those hard times for even more beautiful and significant songs for all of us to enjoy…and bringing us together.

Anfang September reisen die Schülerinnen an, um zur Schule zu gehen, Deutsch zu lernen und den Alltag einer Gastfamilie in Deutschland kennenzulernen. Habt Ihr vielleicht Interesse daran, einen der Schüler*innen zwischen 15-18 Jahren bei euch aufzunehmen und Gastfreundschaft zuhause erlebbar zu machen?

Two Solitudes / Zwei Einsamkeiten ist ein bekanntes Werk des kanadischen Autors Hugh MacLennan, der 1945 die bis dato getrennten Welten Anglo- und Frankokanadas beschreibt. Zwei verschiedene Gesichter also.
Zwei verschiedene Gesichter zeigte jetzt auch Papst Franziskus auf seiner „Pilgerreise der Buße“, auf Betreiben der Indogenen und auf Einladung der kanadischen Regierung, um sich vor Ort für die Gräueltaten in katholischen Internaten („residential schools“) zu entschuldigen.
Die Bilder aus Alberta, Québec und Nunavut zeigten einen zuhörenden, ins Gebet versunkenen, gelegentlich auch mal verschmitzten Mann im Rollstuhl: eine auch ungeheure physische Leistung des hier stark psychisch geforderten Oberhirten. Die vielen Ansprachen mit etlichen Äußerungen von Scham und Schuld waren immer persönlich, privat, individuell; sie enthielten jedoch nie ein –von den Indogenen und auch von der kanadischen Regierung erwartetes– institutionelles Schuldbekenntnis des Oberhaupts der katholischen Kirche. Der Papst wiederholte mehrfach die Formulierung der Schuld „lokaler katholischer Institutionen“, die der römisch-katholischen Kirche als Gesamtinstitution vermied er. Zum Bedauern kanadischer Instanzen sprach er erst auf dem Rückflug vom „Genozid / Völkermord“ an den Indogenen, ohne Qualifizierung der Täter. Auch hier zwei Einsamkeiten – zwei Gesichter.
Der „Mann in Weiß“ lebte auf, wenn er sich einer vertrauten Zielgruppe gegenüber sah: vor dem Klerus bei der Vesper in der Kathedrale von Québec, wo er sogar die Schuld nicht weniger Katholiken an sexuellem Missbrauch einmalig benannte. Auch hier Kritik seitens der Indigenen, die den sexuellen Missbrauch auch ihrer Kinder explizit benannt haben wollten.
Die Reise endete im Norden, in Nunavut, mit einer Aufforderung an die – wenig vertretenen – Jugendlichen, nach Höherem zu streben und Teamgeist zu zeigen. Eine richtige Ansprache – geeignet für einen Weltjugendtag – hier aber am falschen Ort.
Klassisch und peinlich auf diversen Begegnungen mit den Indogenen: die Überzahl mit Schärpen dekorierter Bischöfe, die gelegentlich sogar die Plätze eingeladener Autochthoner blockierten.
Der Papst zeigte ein überzeugendes starkes, persönliches, offenbar einfühlsames, pastorales Auftreten – als oberster Verantwortlicher für eventuelle rechtliche Folgen eines Schuldeingeständnisses namens der Institution Gesamtkirche mit der Bitte um Vergebung blieb er jedoch schweigsam.
Sowohl Premier Trudeau wie die Generalgouverneurin Mary Simons sahen diese „Pilgereise“ des Papstes als Anfang eines längeren Prozesses der Versöhnung. Hier wird viel aufzuarbeiten sein (auch Freigabe der Archive, Rückgabe von Kunstwerken etc,) In den Worten Trudeaus: „ Es ist unsere Verantwortung, unsere Unterschiede nicht als Hindernis zu sehen, sondern als Gelegenheit, zu lernen, einander besser zu verstehen und zu handeln.“ Welche Schritte hier beide Seiten gehen wollen, blieb – noch – offen.
Die Generalgouverneurin Mary Simon (auf Französisch, Englisch und Inuktitut): “Heilung ist eine Reise, kein Ziel“.
„Zwei Seelen wohnen, ach! in meiner Brust…“, heißt es in Goethes Faust. Auch die Institution Gesamt-Kirche muss sich – im Dialog mit den Indogenen und den entsprechend mitbetroffenen Regierungen – entscheiden, wie sie bei ihren hohen sittlichen Ansprüchen mit Verbrechen ihrer Vergangenheit (und teilweise Gegenwart) glaubwürdig und zukunftsweisend umgeht: in Kanada, Deutschland, weltweit.

Die Deutsch-Kanadische Gesellschaft e.V. nimmt Abschied vom ehemaligen Vorstandsvorsitzenden unserer Gesellschaft, Karl Gerhard Döscher, der kurz vor Vollendung des 95. Lebensjahrs am „Kanadischen Wochenende“ in seiner rheinischen Heimat Meckenheim nach einem langen, erfüllten Leben von uns ging.
Karl-Gerhard Döscher, gelernter Industriekaufmann und Kapitän zur See a.D., übernahm ab 1986 den Vorstandsvorsitz der DKG und vollzog den Umzug der Geschäftsstelle von Hannover nach Köln in die Nähe der damaligen kanadischen Botschaft in Bonn. Mit sehr viel persönlicher Initiative baute er nicht nur eine neue Infrastruktur, sondern auch neue Vorstandsmitglieder auf.
Bis 1998 führte Herr Döscher unsere Gesellschaft mit großem persönlichem Einsatz, insbesondere die erfolgreiche Fortführung des Studentenaustauschprogramms (WSP / 1988 erstmals mit sechs Open Work Permits und 1991 mit acht Teilnehmer/-innen aus den „neuen Bundesländern“) und die Belebung der Regionalgruppen. Mit viel Zuspruch und Unterstützung für die Regionalgruppen motivierte er geschickt junge Mitglieder wie mich damals in Oberbayern/ München, die Leitung für „ein bis zwei Veranstaltungen pro Jahr“ zu übernehmen (bei denen es natürlich nicht blieb). Durch die Aktivitäten der Regionalgruppen und des WSP konnte die Mitgliederzahl der DKG unter seiner Ägide von rund 400 verdoppelt werden.
Vorstand und WSP waren in den nicht digitalen achtziger und neunziger Jahren anders als heute. Es wurde deutschlandweit mit Plakaten an den Auslandsämtern der Unis geworben, was jährlich zu bis zu 1.000 Bewerbungen (1992 sogar 1.214 Anfragen !) und die Auswahl von 70 bis 80 Studierenden führte. Ein Vorstandsresort WSP gab es damals nicht. Das bewältigte Herr Döscher mit einer Geschäftsstellenkraft und Unterstützung seiner Ehefrau Dagmar mitunter im „Homeoffice“ per Telefon, einer Schreibmaschine und Faxgerät. Umso erstaunlicher war es für uns in den Regionalgruppen, wenn er daneben auch ab und an zu unseren Veranstaltungen kam oder, wie auch seine Nachfolger, WSP-Arbeitgeber in Kanada besuchte. Durch diese persönlichen Verbindungen nach Kanada wurden WSP-Arbeitsplätze längerfristig gesichert.
Er leistete, wie es unser früherer Ehrenpräsident, Karl L. Barths, einmal formulierte, einen „full time job“ für die DKG. All dies ist bei vielen langjährigen Mitgliedern nicht in Vergessenheit geraten.
Für seine Verdienste um die deutsch-kanadische Völkerverständigung wurde KGD 1999 das Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande verliehen.
Aus beruflichem und persönlichem Pflichtbewußtsein hat Karl-Gerhard Döscher das Amt nach 12 erfolgreichen Jahren nach einem Grundsatz abgegeben, der auch heute noch gilt: Ein Vorstand ist zur Stellung eines kompetenten Nachfolgers verpflichtet. Das war Fregattenkapitän a.D. Dietrich Krafft.
Vorstand und Präsidium der Deutsch-Kanadischen Gesellschaft sind Herrn Döscher zu großem Dank verpflichtet. Er hat die DKG an die Schwelle des neuen Jahrtausends geführt.
Seiner Familie gilt unser tiefes Mitgefühl.

Dear DKG members and Friends of Canada. Originally planned to take place in Frankfurt for 2020, the DKG annual meeting finally happend in Mainhattan on the weekend of July 1st to July 3rd 2022.
Like the years before, we traditionally met for our “Friday Evening Get-Together”, this time in Old Sachsenhausen.
Typical Frankfurt specialties and “Apfelwein” awaited us in one of the city’s most iconic and traditional places.
Around 50 old and new faces gathered jointly to start the weekend in a very good mood. It was a delight to see each other again and welcome new people, among them not only Canada fans but also real Canadians: there were quite a few red and white clothed people in celebration of Canada Day.
On Saturday morning, while some of us were busy in the usual “Elefantenrunde”, others participated in the organised old city tour. The meeting point was in front of the Paulskirche, which could not be visited as it is being renovated. The guides took the groups to the “Rathaus”, the “Römer”, the famous “Kaisersaal” and the “neue Altstadt” to finish off the tour at “Kleinmarkthalle”. The guests were given a lot of very interesting information about the history of Frankfurt and everyone enjoyed their morning very much.
In the afternoon, we had our annual members assembly in the offices of the “Kanzlei Arnecke-Sibeth-Dabelstein”, our deepest thanks to our President, Michael Siebold and his staff for making this possible. We were informed that our longtime board member, Bernd Brummermann, responsible for our Work and Travel Program, is leaving his place after 18 years (he will be joining the “Präsidium”). Thank you so very much Bernd for your dedication all these years in insuring that our program, one of the oldest of its kind, could still continue and thrive, even during the pandemic. Chapeau!!!
But for our greatest pleasure, we have a more than worthy candidate to follow up Bernd’s footsteps as Sina Burghardt has been elected to take over. Sina took part in our program herself, she accompanied “WSP” participants to Canada, created our Instagram account and has been taking care of the DKG presence on social media. She helped creating the task forces, the DKG volunteer group and so much more! We are very confident that our program will continue to be in good hands. Bravo Sina!
To make sure that our social media presence is not neglected, Sina handed over that task to Carolin Koch. Carolin is an ex-WSP participant and is also the recipient of the DKG scholarship of 2019. She is working with the task force teams and is very dedicated to the DKG. Thank you Carolin!!!
It is also important to mention that we have an increase in DKG membership, a very positive development.
The next DKG annual meeting will take place in Rostock from June 30th to July 2nd, 2023 (you can already save the date 🙂 ). In 2024, it will take place in Munich, in 2025 in Bonn and in 2026 in Dortmund.
On Saturday evening, around 100 people gathered at the Marriott Frankfurt (whom we would like to thank for helping make our event so successful) to celebrate with us. We had the great pleasure of welcoming the band that played for us in Lahr in 2019. Four excellent musicians playing Canadian music who call themselves “Heart of Gold”. After a word of welcome from our chairman, Stefan Rizor, the band accompanied classical singer Julie Schmitt (a Canadian who lives in Mainz) to perform the national anthems of Canada and Germany. Julie blew us all away with a very touching performance. There was barely a dry eye left in the room. We thank her very much for being a part of our celebrations!
The presenters throughout the evening were our President, Michael Siebold and yours truly (thank you Michael for the opportunity).
We had the great honour of welcoming a very prestigious guest, the Ambassador of Canada in Germany, Stéphane Dion. Ambassador Dion delivered an excellent speech as only He can do it.
Warm, welcoming, very entertaining and sincere. And although he must leave Germany to take on the position of the Ambassador of Canada in France, he told us he would ensure a continuation of the good relations between the Embassy of Canada in Germany and the DKG with his successor. As it was the last time Ambassador Dion would be able to participate in a DKG event before going to Paris, the organizers of the weekend, the DKG Team Rhein-Main, offered him a gift to remember Frankfurt and Germany by: an engraving of “Die deutsche Nationalversammlung in der Paulskirche zu Frankfurt am Main” at 1848. It represents the cradle of German democracy and it is what connects our countries so strongly. Nos sincères remerciements à Monsieur l’Ambassadeur Dion pour son engagement envers la Société canado-allemande.
After that the DKG handed over its 2021 “Ehrenpreis” to photographer Martin Weinhold whom we would like to congratulate once again! His Prize was presented by Dr. habil. Ulrich Bleyer (Präsidium). The “Ehrenpreis” 2022 is going to German journalist Gerd Braune who lives in Canada. Mr Braune was unfortunately unable to be present in person, but he will receive his Prize in due form in Rostock in 2023. Congratulations and we are looking forward to seeing you next year!
We then all enjoyed a nice buffet with Canadian touches. Afterwards people started to mingle and enjoy each others company. Although we did not have a proper “dance floor” per se, the excellent band prevented us from being still; all of a sudden almost everybody started to dance!
In between we had a funny quiz and 4 of us were able to snatch high quality Canadian products, gracioulsy offered by Mélody Roussy-Parent of Melody’s Canada: thank you very kindly Melody for your generosity!!
This summary would not be complete without thanking our friends of “McGill Alumni Association of Germany” for taking part in our celebrations. It was really great to have you and we hope to see you again in Rostock next year!
As we usually do, we ended the evening with a chill out. And at least half of the crowd met downstairs at the Champions bar; even the Ambassador joined in.
On Sunday morning, the guests were all invited on a small cruise on the Main River. The weather was perfect and it was a very pleasant way to end the weekend.
I would like to thank our Regional Director Rhein-Main, Michael Hahn and my fellow team members, Frank Herrnschmidt and Ulrich Barths, as well as the DKG “Geschäftsstelle” and Stefan Rizor for making this successful weekend possible, in spite of many obstacles along the way.
Let me just finish my “résumé” by saying how proud I am to be part of the DKG community. So many different people united by their love for Canada, my own home country. Young and old and in between, all working together to build a place where everyone fits in, where we can all connect and somehow make the world a better place. I have been around for many years now, and there has never been a better time to be invloved in the DKG. A DKG open to the world and the future, a DKG that is constantly reinventing itself, for the love of people, and the love of Canada.
We wish you a happy Canada Day, wherever you are – maybe with us in Frankfurt as we come together for our annual meeting, in the comfort of your home/garden or at some special celebration or maybe even in Canada.
Let’s acknowledge everything that is good in the world and celebrate the German-Canadian friendship!
