Rückblick – Kanadisches Wochenende 2025
Vom 04. bis 06. Juli 2025 feierte die Deutsch-Kanadische Gesellschaft gleich mehrere Jubiläen und empfing wertvolle Gäste aus Kanada und Deutschland.
Wie jedes Jahr trafen sich am ersten Wochenende nach dem Canada Day DKG-Mitglieder, deren Begleitung und weitere Interessent:innen zum DKG-Jahrestreffen dieses Mal in Bonn.
Am Freitagabend beim „Get-Together“ im Sion im Carré wurde sich bereits mit gutem Essen und Getränken auf das Wochenende eingestimmt. Neben den zahlreichen Wiedersehen und Gesprächen wurde außerdem ausgiebig gefeiert, da zum 60. Jubiläum des Work and Travel-Programms unsere WSP-Mama Gisela von Wissel nach 20 Jahren und mehr als 700 begleiteten Kindern in den Ruhestand verabschiedet wurde. Für ihre liebevolle und leidenschaftliche Betreuung unserer WSPler:innen wurde sie mit dem DKG-Ehrenpreis gewürdigt.
Auch Evelyne Coulombe, Chargée d‘Affaires a.i. nahm zusammen mit ihrem Mann bereits an dem Get-Together teil und teilte dankende Worte mit der Deutsch-Kanadischen Gesellschaft.
Um das Jubiläum gebührend zu feiern, haben Steckbriefe ehemaliger WSPler:innen und ein nostalgischer Vortrag von Michael Nussbaum Erinnerungen wiederaufleben lassen.
Nach diesem schönen Auftakt startete das Samstagsprogramm mit zwei Stadtführungen: Unsere Gäste konnten an einer historischen oder politischen Führung durch die ehemalige Bundeshauptstadt teilnehmen während im Hintergrund die Vorbereitungen für die Mitgliederversammlung liefen, die anschließend am Nachmittag im UniClub stattfand.
Am Abend trafen wir uns alle im Uniclub Bonn wieder und leiteten – mit den Begrüßungsworten der ehrenamtlichen Bürgermeisterin Dr. Ursula Sautter – den Festakt ein. Als Gäste durften wir hier Nathalie Bonin und Cosmin Boeru für die musikalische Begleitung und Ben MacLean für einen Comedy-Auftritt begrüßen.
Auch unsere ehemalige WSP-Teilnehmerin Carolin Koch stand auf der Bühne und sang für uns die kanadische und deutsche Hymne.
Neben dem guten Essen und einer Menge herzlicher Gespräche durften wir Evelyn Coulombe für ein spannendes Interview auf die Bühne bitten. Sie stärkte mit ihren zuversichtlichen Worten und dem sicheren Blick in die Zukunft der DKG in ihrer Rolle als Schnittstelle den Rücken.
Wie fast jedes Jahr wurde auch dieses Mal ein zweiter DKG-Ehrenpreis vergeben. Dieses Mal an die Stiftung Wilderness International, die sich dafür engagiert, intakte Wildnis unteranderem in den Regenwäldern British Columbias zu schützen. Durch die Unterstützung eines Euros schützt die Organisation einen Quadratmeter an Wildnis – für immer. Für die Übergabe war Chris Hoffmann vor Ort und bedankte sich im Namen der gesamten Organisation.
Zum Abschluss des Festakts wurde die Tombola mit Preisen von Melodys Canada und Wine in Motion aufgelöst, welche spielwillige DKG-Mitglieder mit kanadischem Wein, Ahornsirup und Ölen beglückte.
Und wie sollte es im Rheinland anders sein, lud das Team abschließend zum Pub Crawl in der Bonner Innenstadt ein, wo wir den schönen und ereignisreichen Abend mit Bönnsch und Kölsch ausklingen ließen.
Am Sonntag wurde noch eine Fährrundfahrt auf dem Rhein sowie eine geführter Besuch in der Bundeskunsthalle angeboten, bevor sich unsere Gäste in die verschiedenen Regionen Deutschlands und Kanadas verabschiedeten.
Es war uns eine große Freude, so viele Kanadafreund:innen in Bonn begrüßen zu dürfen. Bis zum nächsten Mal – 2026 sehen wir uns in Dortmund wieder!
From the 4th to the 6th of July, the German-Canadian Society celebrated several anniversaries and welcomed precious guests from Canada and Germany.
Like every year, DKG-members, their partners, relatives and other interested people came together, on the first weekend after Canada Day, for the DKG-Jahrestreffen (annual meeting) in Bonn this time.
Friday evening, at the “Get-Together”, everyone tuned in for the weekend with good food and drinks at the “Sion im Carré”. In addition to numerous reunions and conversations, the 60th anniversary of the Work and Travel program was celebrated, with our WSP-Mom Gisela von Wissel retiring after 20 years of work and more than 700 accompanied children. She was honored with the DKG Honorary Award for her loving and passionate care of our WSP participants.
Evelyne Coulombe, Chargée d‘Affaires a.i., also attended the Get-Together together with her husband and shared words of gratitude with the German-Canadian Society.
To properly celebrate the anniversary, letters from former WSP participants and a nostalgic speech by Michael Nussbaum brought back memories.
Following this lovely start, Saturday’s program began with two city tours: Guests could participate in a historical or political tour of the former federal capital while preparations for the members‘ meeting were underway in the background, which took place in the afternoon at the UniClub.
In the evening, we all met again at the UniClub Bonn to commence the festive ceremony – with welcoming words from honorary mayor Dr. Ursula Sautter. We were blessed to welcome Nathalie Bonin and Cosmin Boeru for musical accompaniment and Ben MacLean for a comedy performance.
Our former WSP participant Carolin Koch also took the stage and sang the Canadian and German anthems for us.
In addition to good food and many heartfelt conversations, we invited Evelyn Coulombe to the stage for an exciting interview. She strengthened the DKG with her confident words and assured outlook on the DKG’s future as an interface for German-Canadian relations.
As almost every year, a second DKG Honorary Award was presented. This time to the Wilderness International Foundation, which is dedicated to protecting intact wilderness, including the rainforests of British Columbia. By donating one euro, the organization protects one square meter of wilderness – forever. Chris Hoffmann was present for the reception and thanked the DKG on the behalf of the entire organisation.
At the end of the ceremony, the raffle with prizes from Melodys Canada and Wine in Motion was drawn, which delighted DKG members with Canadian wine, maple syrup, and oils.
And as it should be in the Rhineland, the team concluded with a pub crawl in downtown Bonn, where we let the beautiful and eventful evening fade out with Bönnsch and Kölsch.
On Sunday, a ferry tour on the Rhine and a guided tour of the Bundeskunsthalle were offered before our guests said goodbye and traveled home to various regions of Germany and Canada.
It was a great pleasure for us to welcome so many friends of Canada in Bonn. Until next time – we will see each other again in Dortmund in 2026!
