Der Wunsch, eine Fremdsprache zu lernen, kann einen manchmal viel weiter führen, als man sich je vorstellen würde. Für Mélody Roussy-Parent wurde daraus eine echte Liebesgeschichte mit der Stadt München.
Man glaubt, jemanden zu kennen … bis ein Interview eine ganze, bisher unentdeckte Welt offenbart.
Last mich euch also Mélody Roussy-Parent vorstellen. Geboren und aufgewachsen in Rimouski, Québec, als Tochter eines Malers aus Trois-Pistoles und einer Galeristin aus Port-Daniel, wuchs sie in einem ausgeprägt europäischen Kulturumfeld auf. Der kulturelle Hintergrund ihrer Eltern, ihre Erziehung und ihre große Reiselust zogen sie schon immer nach Europa.
Im Juli 1996, während ihres Studiums der Geologieingenieurwissenschaften in Montreal, beschloss Mélody, nach München zu gehen, um Deutsch zu lernen. Warum gerade diese Sprache? Vielleicht, weil sie ihr nicht völlig fremd war – sie kannte bereits einige Grundlagen aus ihrer Kindheit, dank ihrer Teilnahme am Chor des Konservatoriums und dem Freundeskreis ihrer Eltern.
Knapp zwei Jahre später, im März 1998, traf sie eine mutige Entscheidung: Sie brach ihr Studium in Montreal ab und ließ sich in München nieder. Und mit einem großen Lächeln gesteht sie, dass sie sich in der bayerischen Hauptstadt von Anfang an zu Hause fühlte.
„Auf zu neuen Horizonten!“
Nach sechs Monaten intensiver Sprachkurse und völliges Eintauchen in die Münchner Lebensart begann Mélody an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München ein Magister-Artium-Studium der Sprachwissenschaften sowie Deutsch als Fremdsprache.
Im Jahr 2005, mit dem Diplom in der Hand, gründete sie ihr eigenes Unternehmen Melody’s Canada, ein Importgeschäft für kanadische Produkte. 2006 eröffnete sie ihr Ladengeschäft in der Jahnstraße in München und 2010 kam ein Online-Shop hinzu. 2012 entschied sie sich, sich ausschließlich auf den Online-Handel zu konzentrieren – und weiterhin exklusive kanadische Produkte in Deutschland und ganz Europa bekannt zu machen.
Man könnte denken, dass das ihren Alltag schon ausreichend füllt – aber nicht für Mélo! Wenn sie gerade nicht Geschäfte mit Kanada macht, unterrichtet sie Wirtschaftsfranzösisch an der Universität und Deutsch als Zweitsprache (Niveau B2) bei Inlingua. Und als wäre das nicht genug, bietet sie auch Beratungsdienste für kleine und mittelständische kanadische Unternehmen an, die sich in Deutschland niederlassen möchten.
Und das ist noch nicht alles: Mélody engagiert sich auch aktiv in der Gemeinschaft. Sie ist Präsidentin der Association Québécoise en Allemagne (AQA) und Corporate Mitglied der Deutsch-Kanadischen Gesellschaft (DKG).
Mélody ist einfach Mélody – wie ihre Freunde sagen. Strahlend, großzügig und voller ansteckender Lebensfreude. Ihr Lachen, so hell und ehrlich, ist zu ihrem Markenzeichen geworden – obwohl sie, wie sie lachend zugibt, es in Deutschland ein wenig zügeln musste, weil es die Leute manchmal überraschte!
Ihr Rat für alle, die sich in Deutschland niederlassen möchten?
„Lernt die Sprache und engagiert euch in der Gemeinschaft – sei es in einem Verein oder einer Organisation. Das ist der beste Weg, Menschen kennenzulernen.“
Und mit einem Lächeln fügt sie hinzu:
„Wundert euch nicht, wenn die Deutschen anfangs etwas humorlos wirken … wartet einfach bis zum Karneval!“
Und eine Rückkehr nach Kanada – steht das zur Debatte?
„Nein, ich glaube nicht. Obwohl ich stolz auf meine Wurzeln bin, liebe ich die europäische Lebensart und fühle mich in München glücklich.“
Gute Nachrichten also für Ahornsirup-Liebhaber und alle, die Sehnsucht nach Québec haben: Melody’s Canada wird uns weiterhin mit kanadischen Köstlichkeiten versorgen – direkt hier in Deutschland.

The desire to learn a foreign language can sometimes lead much farther than one might imagine. For Mélody Roussy-Parent, it turned into a true love affair with the city of Munich.
You think you know someone… until an interview reveals a whole unsuspected world.
So let me introduce Mélody Roussy-Parent. Born and raised in Rimouski, Quebec, to a painter father from Trois-Pistoles and an art gallery–owner mother from Port-Daniel, she grew up surrounded by a distinctly European cultural atmosphere. The cultural background of her parents, her upbringing, and her strong love of travel had always drawn her toward Europe.
In July 1996, while studying geological engineering in Montreal, Mélody decided to go to Munich to learn German. Why that language? Perhaps because it wasn’t entirely foreign to her—she already knew a few basics from childhood, thanks to her participation in the Conservatory of Music choir and her parents’ circle of friends.
Less then two years later, in March 1998, she made a bold decision: to leave her studies in Montreal and settle in Munich. And with a big smile, she confides that she has always felt at home in the Bavarian capital.
“Let’s go discover new horizons!”
After six months of intensive courses and full immersion, Mélody entered the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich to pursue a Magister Artium in Linguistic Sciences and Teaching German as a Foreign Language (Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft, Indogermanistik, Deutsch als Fremdsprache).
In 2005, diploma in hand, she started her own business and founded Melody’s Canada, an import company for Canadian products. She opened her shop in 2006 on Jahnstrasse in Munich, and added an online store in 2010. By 2012, she decided to focus exclusively on the online shop, continuing to promote exclusive Canadian products in Germany and across Europe.
You might think that would be enough to fill her days—but not for Mélo! When she’s not doing business with Canada, she teaches Business French at the university and German as a Second Language (level B2) at Inlingua. And as if that weren’t enough, she also offers consulting services to small and medium-sized Canadian companies wishing to establish themselves in Germany.
And that’s not all: Mélody is actively involved in the community. She is the President of the Association Québécoise en Allemagne (AQA) and a Corporate Member of the Deutsch-Kanadische Gesellschaft (DKG).
Mélody is simply Mélody—as her friends say. Radiant, generous, and full of contagious joie de vivre. Her laugh, as bright as it is genuine, has become her trademark… although, she admits with a laugh, she had to tone it down a little—because in Germany, it sometimes caught people off guard!
Her advice for those wishing to settle in Germany?
“Learn the language and get involved in the community—whether through a club or an association. It’s the best way to meet people.”
She adds with a smile:
“Don’t be surprised if Germans seem to lack humor at first… Just wait for Carnival!”
And a return to Canada—could that be in the plans?
“No, I don’t think so. While I’m proud of my roots, I love the European way of life and feel happy in Munich.” Good news for maple syrup lovers and those nostalgic for Quebec: Melody’s Canada will continue to supply us with Canadian delights—right here in Germany.

L’envie d’apprendre une langue étrangère peut parfois mener bien plus loin qu’on ne l’imagine. Pour Mélody Roussy-Parent, elle s’est transformée en véritable coup de foudre pour la ville de Munich.
On croit connaître une personne… jusqu’à ce qu’une entrevue révèle tout un univers insoupçonné.
Je vous présente donc Mélody Roussy-Parent. Née et élevée à Rimouski, au Québec, d’un père artiste-peintre de Trois-Pistoles et d’une mère galériste de Port-Daniel, elle a grandi dans une ambiance empreinte de culture européenne. Le bagage culturel de ses parents, son éducation et son goût prononcé pour les voyages l’ont toujours attirée vers l’Europe.
En juillet 1996, alors qu’elle étudiait le génie géologique à Montréal, Mélody décide de partir à Munich pour y apprendre l’allemand. Pourquoi cette langue ? Peut-être parce qu’elle ne lui était pas si étrangère : elle en connaissait déjà quelques notions apprises dès l’enfance, grâce à sa participation dans la chorale du Conservatoire de Musique et l’entourage de ses parents.
Moins de deux ans plus tard, en mars 1998, elle prend une décision audacieuse : quitter ses études à Montréal pour s’installer à Munich. Et c’est avec un grand sourire qu’elle confie s’y être toujours sentie comme chez elle, au cœur de la capitale bavaroise.
« Allons découvrir de nouveaux horizons! »

On pourrait croire que cela suffit à remplir ses journées, mais pas pour Mélo ! Lorsqu’elle ne traite pas avec le Canada, elle enseigne le français des affaires à l’université, ainsi que l’allemand langue seconde (niveau B2) à Inlingua. Et comme si cela ne suffisait pas, elle offre aussi des services de consultation aux petites et moyennes entreprises canadiennes souhaitant s’établir en Allemagne.
Et ce n’est pas tout : Mélody s’implique activement dans la communauté. Elle est présidente de l’Association québécoise en Allemagne (AQA) et membre corporatif de la Deutsch-Kanadische Gesellschaft (DKG).
Mélody, c’est Mélody — comme disent ses amis. Rayonnante, généreuse, et animée d’une joie de vivre communicative. Son rire, aussi éclatant que sincère, est devenu sa marque de fabrique… même si, confie-t-elle en riant, elle a dû apprendre à le modérer un peu : en Allemagne, cela surprenait parfois!
Ses conseils à ceux qui souhaitent s’installer en Allemagne?
« Apprenez la langue, et impliquez-vous dans la communauté — que ce soit à travers un club ou une association. C’est la meilleure façon de rencontrer du monde. »
Elle ajoute, en souriant :
« Ne soyez pas surpris si les Allemands semblent manquer d’humour au premier abord… Attendez le Carnaval ! »
Et un retour au Canada, est-ce prévu?
« Non, je ne pense pas. Tout en étant fière de mes origines, j’aime le rythme de vie à l’européenne et me considère heureuse à Munich. »
