Von Deutschland nach Halifax – der Beginn einer Reise
Vor einem Jahr saß ich noch in Hörsälen in Deutschland und begann mein Leben als Student.
Das war aufregend, aber mir war immer klar, dass ich mehr von der Welt sehen wollte, bevor ich mich voll und ganz auf das Studentenleben einlasse – ich wollte Menschen kennenlernen, die anders aufgewachsen sind als ich, Sprachen hören, die nicht meine Muttersprache sind, sehen, wie ein anderer Kontinent aussieht, und herausfinden, wer ich außerhalb des Lebens bin, das ich bereits kannte.
Für mich stand fest, dass ich nach Kanada gehen wollte. Also suchte ich nach Möglichkeiten und stieß auf die DKG. Alles verlief reibungslos, und schon war ich in Kanada angekommen.
Ich hatte in dieser Zeit ein paar arbeitsfreie Tage, um die Stadt Halifax zu erkunden.
Leider musste ich feststellen, dass der öffentliche Nahverkehr bei weitem nicht so gut ist wie in Deutschland und jeder ein Auto hat – ich jedoch nicht.
Die Stadt selbst ist wunderschön und hat viele unberührte Ecken, die ich gerne erkundet habe.
Mein Lieblingsort: Point Pleasant.
Einer der Momente, die mir am meisten in Erinnerung geblieben sind, ereignete sich, als ich mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs war und mitten auf der Straße einen Platten hatte. Zu Hause hätte ich wohl damit gerechnet, das alleine bewältigen zu müssen. Hier kamen sofort Leute herbei – niemand fragte zweimal, sie unterbrachen einfach ihre Tätigkeit, um einem Fremden zu helfen, wieder weiterzukommen. Es war eine Kleinigkeit, ein geplatzer Reifen, aber es sagte viel darüber aus, an welchem Ort ich jetzt lebe.
Dann musste ich schließlich anfangen zu arbeiten, und das unterscheidet sich leider nicht allzu sehr von der Arbeit in Deutschland. Aber man muss tun, was man tun muss, um in Kanada Fuß zu fassen.
Die Weltmeisterschaft stand an, aber die Kanadier sind nicht so fußballbegeistert wie die Deutschen.
Ich habe trotzdem hier und da in einem Pub gute Erfahrungen gemacht; es war schön, näher am Geschehen zu sein, als ich es in Deutschland gewesen wäre.
Mein Work-and-Travel-Jahr ist noch nicht vorbei, und ich bin mir sicher, dass Halifax noch mehr zu bieten hat. Aber nach ein paar Monaten weiß ich schon so viel: Ich bin hierhergekommen, um die Welt und andere Kulturen zu entdecken, und genau das erlebe ich gerade und lerne dabei für mein Leben.
Ich bin sehr gespannt darauf, was die Zukunft in Kanada noch bereithält, vor allem auf die Zeit, in der ich reisen und andere Provinzen erkunden kann. Ich bin genau dort, wo ich sein möchte, und es war definitiv die richtige Entscheidung, diese wundervolle Reise anzutreten.

From Germany to Halifax – the start of a journey
A year ago, I was still sitting in classrooms in Germany, starting my university lifestyle.
That was exciting but I always knew I wanted to see more of the world before I fully commit to the university lifestyle — I wanted to meet people who grew up differently than I did, hear languages that were not my native language, see what another continent looks like, and figure out who I am outside of the life I already knew.
For me it was clear that I wanted to go to Canada. So I searched for opportunities and found the DKG. Everything went smoothly and I already arrived in Canada.
I had a few days without work to explore the city of Halifax in that time.
Unfortunately I had to realise that the public transport is not nearly as good as it is in Germany and everybody has a car which I don´t.
The city itself is beautiful and has many untouched corners which I loved to explore.
My favorite place: Point Pleasant.
One of the moments that have stayed with me the most happened when I was out on my bike when I blew a tire in the middle of the street. Back home, I might have expected to deal with that alone. Here, people came over immediately — no one asked twice, they just stopped what they were doing to help a stranger get back on his way. It was a small thing, a flat tire, but it told me a lot about the kind of place I´m living in now.
Then I finally had to start working and that’s unfortunately not too different to be working in Germany. But you must do what you have to do, to get started in Canada.
The World Cup came, but Canadians are not too much into football.
I still made good experiences in a pub here and there, it was nice to be closer to the games then I would be in Germany.
My Work and Travel year isn’t over yet, and I’m sure Halifax still has more to show me. But a few months in, I already know this much: I came here to explore the world and other cultures, and I´m experiencing exactly that and learn for my life.
I´m very excited for what the future in Canada gives, especially the time when I can travel and explore other provinces. I´m right where I want to be and it was definitely the right call to start this wonderful journey.

De l’Allemagne à Halifax : le début d’un voyage
Il y a un an, j’étais encore assis dans les amphithéâtres en Allemagne, où je commençais ma vie d’étudiant.
C’était passionnant, mais j’ai toujours su que je voulais découvrir davantage le monde avant de m’engager pleinement dans la vie universitaire : je voulais rencontrer des gens qui avaient grandi différemment de moi, entendre des langues autres que ma langue maternelle, voir à quoi ressemble un autre continent et découvrir qui j’étais en dehors de la vie que je connaissais déjà.
Pour moi, il était clair que je voulais aller au Canada. J’ai donc cherché des opportunités et j’ai trouvé la DKG. Tout s’est bien passé et je suis déjà arrivé au Canada.
J’ai eu quelques jours de libre pour explorer la ville d’Halifax pendant cette période.
Malheureusement, j’ai dû me rendre à l’évidence : les transports en commun sont loin d’être aussi efficaces qu’en Allemagne et tout le monde possède une voiture, ce qui n’est pas mon cas.
La ville en elle-même est magnifique et regorge de coins préservés que j’ai adoré explorer.
Mon endroit préféré : Point Pleasant.
L’un des moments qui m’a le plus marqué s’est produit alors que j’étais à vélo et que j’ai crevé en plein milieu de la rue. Chez moi, je me serais sans doute attendu à devoir m’en sortir tout seul. Ici, les gens se sont précipités immédiatement — personne n’a posé de questions, ils ont simplement interrompu ce qu’ils faisaient pour aider un inconnu à reprendre la route. C’était un petit incident, un pneu crevé, mais cela m’en a beaucoup appris sur le genre d’endroit où je vis désormais.
Puis j’ai finalement dû commencer à travailler et cela ne diffère malheureusement pas beaucoup de ce que je connaissais auparavant. Mais il faut bien faire ce qu’il faut pour prendre un nouveau départ au Canada.
La Coupe du monde a eu lieu, mais les Canadiens ne sont pas très fans de football.
J’ai tout de même vécu de bons moments dans quelques pubs ici et là ; c’était sympa d’être plus proche des matchs que je ne l’aurais été en Allemagne.
Mon année « Work and Travel » n’est pas encore terminée, et je suis sûr qu’Halifax a encore beaucoup à m’offrir. Mais après quelques mois, je sais déjà une chose : je suis venu ici pour découvrir le monde et d’autres cultures, et c’est exactement ce que je vis actuellement, tout en apprenant des leçons pour la vie.
J’ai hâte de découvrir ce que l’avenir me réserve au Canada, en particulier le moment où je pourrai voyager et explorer d’autres provinces. Je suis exactement là où je veux être et j’ai sans aucun doute pris la bonne décision en me lançant dans cette merveilleuse aventure.
