Die DKG Familie beherbergt viele interessante Leute. Darunter sind auch Personen die eine besonders ausgeprägte Verbindung zu Kanada haben. Jennifer Dummer ist eine davon. Talentiert und vielfältig hat die freie Journalistin ihre Liebe zur franko-kanadischen Kultur zum Beruf gemacht. Auch als Übersetzerin ist sie tätig; die Wahlberlinerin studierte französische Literaturwissenschaft in Mainz, Berlin und Montréal. Heute vermittelt Jennifer Québecer Kultur im deutschsprachigen Raum. Zum Beispiel in diesen beiden Blogs: https://jennismusikbloqc.com/ und https://quelesen.com/ wo sie über das Neueste in Literatur und Musik aus Quebec berichtet. Darüber hinaus, organisiert sie noch verschiedenste Veranstaltungen rund um das Thema Quebec und Kultur.
Im Herbst 2020 erschien ein erstes Buch: „Pareil mais différent- Genauso, nur anders“, eine Zusammenstellung von Jennifer Dummer aus franko-kanadischen Kurzgeschichten die gleichzeitig in Deutsch und Französisch zu lesen sind. Unter anderem sind Erzählungen von Kim Thúy, Naomi Fontaine und David Goudreault enthalten.
Die Liebe zu Kanada kam für Jennifer vor circa 12 Jahren als sie dort Zeit „von Coast to Coast“ verbrachte. Wer aufmerksam ist, hat bestimmt schon mal einen Artikel von Jennifer in 360 Grad Kanada Magazin oder im DKG Journal gelesen.

Our first Virtual Canadian Christmas Celebration
On Friday, December 18th, the DKG and the Canadian Club of Belgium virtually celebrated a Canadian Christmas on Zoom. Of the 180 registered people, at least 110 participated and made this premiere a great success!
The idea of our Virtual Canadian Pub Nights team, consisting of Martin Gutsch (DKG Treasurer and Member of the Executive Committee), Tamara Joyette (DKG member) and Karl Boulé (CCB), to connect people and share some Christmas spirit in these trying times spread further to create a team of „jolly good fellows“ who prepared a wonderful night.
The evening started with some background Christmas music to welcome the participants. Then our fantastic host Tamara guided us through the program. She handed over to our first-class DKG Vice-President Georg Schmitz, who introduced four very important guests whom we would like to thank once again for taking the time to support us and give welcome addresses: Mrs Isabelle Poupart of the Embassy of Canada to Germany, Mrs Caroline Jenner, President of the Canadian Club of Belgium, and our very own DKG President Michael Siebold as well as DKG Chairman Stefan Rizor.
The highlight of the evening was the participation of the very talented Singer/Songwriter Christina Martin from Nova Scotia. Not only did Christina prepare three wonderful original Christmas songs with her partner and husband Dale Murray to warm our hearts: „Kisses for Christmas“, „Coming back home for Christmas“ and „This Christmas“; but she also gave an interview, participated the whole evening and even hosted her own breakout room with the Canadian game „Fluster“. If you haven’t discovered Christina yet, you should definitely visit her website. A greatly talented artist and a caring human being. Thank you so very much again for so delightfully brightening our Christmas celebration!
After the interview with Christina, we moved on to some fun activities in the different breakout rooms such as Trivia, a Canadian Christmas Quiz, Chat rooms, Fluster and Scattergories as well as the DKG room, in which we held a live-interview with three participants currently in Canada. Thank you to Anna Herzog (Barriere, B.C.) and Alexandra Weipert and Alexander Liebrecht (Calgary, Alberta) for telling us about your experiences in Canada and showing us many impressive photos.
Another highlight was our poetry contest, which both moved us and made us laugh. Thank you to everyone who submitted a poem, and congratulations to our winner Clarissa! The first three places will be awarded some nice Canadian prizes!
After the official part, some of us stayed behind to chat some more so that the celebration went on well after midnight. Thank you to all who participated and made this evening a magical one!

Die DKG bei der Dreikönigswallfahrt im Kölner Dom
Zur Dreikönigswallfahrt am 26. September luden der Hausherr Monsignore Kleine und die CologneAlliance (Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Städtepartnerschaften der Stadt Köln e.V.) in den Kölner Dom. Unter Corona-Bedingungen waren die Reihen im Dom dünner besetzt, schließlich mussten Sicherheitsabstände und Hygienekonzept gewahrt werden. Der Festlichkeit tat das jedoch keinen Abbruch. Insgesamt 19 Vereine – darunter auch wir als DKG – versammelten sich, um gemeinsam das Friedensgebet zu sprechen. Ob Finnisch, Arabisch, Französisch, Hebräisch oder Englisch: die Sprachen der Vereine waren dabei genauso vielfältig wie die Städte- und Länderpartnerschaften. Ein schönes Zeichen für die Gemeinschaft aller Nationen, das besonders in diesem Jahr an Bedeutung gewinnt.
Grußwort unseres Präsidenten Michael Siebold bei der Einweihung eines deutsch-kanadischen Wandgemäldes
Im Rahmen der Städtepartnerschaft zwischen Frankfurt am Main und Toronto wurde am 13. Oktober 2020 ein kürzlich fertiggestelltes Wandgemälde der beiden Künstler Alexander Lazich (Künstlername: Bacon) und Justus Becker präsentiert. Das Projekt des Künstleraustausches der beiden Städte wurde 2019 in Kooperation mit dem Goethe Institut Toronto im Rahmen des 30-jährigen Jubiläums der Städtepartnerschaft ins Leben gerufen. Zur Einweihung des Kunstwerks hielt neben dem Oberbürgermeister Frankfurts, Peter Feldmann, auch unser Präsident Michael Siebold ein Grußwort in der U-Bahn-Station Festhalle/Messe, in der das Gemälde zu sehen ist. Es zeigt die Wahrzeichen der beiden Städte: den Adler der Stadt Frankfurt und den Waschbär der Partnerstadt Toronto. Die offizielle Meldung der Stadt Frankfurt ist unter diesem Link zu finden.
The Deutsch-Kanadische Gesellschaft – Canadian Club of Belgium Virtual Pub Night Series
Dear DKG-CCB Members, Canadians and Canadians at heart,
during the Spring 2020, as we were all confined at home, our treasurer, Martin Gutsch, came up with and developed the idea of virtual meetings together with two Canadians: Tamara Joyette, DKG member and Karl Boulé of the Canadian-Club of Belgium. We presented them to you on this very page.
I have had the chance to participate to these nights a couple times, even once presented my hometown of Quebec city. I was very pleasantly surprised to encounter quite a few Canadians and Canada fans even some on different continents. But that is the magic of the internet. We have had exchanges on different subjects where everyone was able to participate, we have had quizzes, presentations and this Friday Halloween will be celebrated (there are still some places!!!! Register here)
Now that we are facing another hard couple weeks in terms of „physically socializing“, the virtual pub nights are certainly a great opportunity to connect with other humans. All you have to do is scan our event calendar or go to our Facebook page and register. It is free of charge and you can even share ideas you might have. The team is working on new themes but really it is up to us all to make the most of this very bizarre situation. So even if we must be patient for Canadian events to come back the way we know them, we can join and share our love for Canada virtually. So come along with your pint or glass of wine for a night of Canadian fun!!!

Kanada Ehrengast bei der Frankfurter Buchmesse 2020-2021
Die Frankfurter Buchmesse (14.-18. Oktober) mit Gastland Kanada hat dieses Jahr auf ein virtuelles Programm umgestellt und bietet einige interessante Veranstaltungen an. Unter anderem wird es am 17. Oktober das BOOKFEST digital mit kulturellen und literarischen Performances, Buchpräsentationen, interaktiven Meet & Greets mit AutorInnen, Musikshows und vielem mehr geben. Speziell kanadische Veranstaltungen wurden zudem von Steven Guilbeault, Minister für kanadisches Kulturerbe, in dieser Videobotschaft angekündigt. Hier kann die dazugehörige Pressemitteilung eingesehen werden. Einen Überblick über alle kanadischen Online-Veranstaltungen gibt es hier. Im Rahmen des Vancouver Writers Fests kann man z.B. ein Gespräch zwischen Cherie Dimaline und Margaret Atwood verfolgen. Die kanadische Autorin Atwood brachte im letzten Jahr mit The Testaments die Fortsetzung ihres erfolgreichen Dystopian Novels The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) auf den Markt und gewann damit den Booker Prize 2019 zusammen mit der Britin Bernadine Evaristo, deren Buch Girl, Woman, Other ebenfalls ausgezeichnet wurde.
